Without a doubt, the Oculus Rift headset is one of the most popular headsets out there. Even we admit that Oculus is the first major VR company that we knew. It became even more popular when Facebook bought Oculus for $2 billion in March 2014.
The company’s primary product is the Oculus Rift headset, and it also powers the Samsung Gear VR headset. Other items for sale on the company’s website include Oculus Rift Earphones, Oculus Touch, and Sensor. Today we will review 5 Oculus Rift accessories. Like we did with the Sony VR accessories, we will start with an overview of the product’s main features, then review the products briefly.
USA GEAR S7 Pro Oculus Rift Carry Case
The bag features a durable design that includes reinforced padded walls, an exterior made of RipStop Nylon, and a rugged bottom to ensure that the headset can withstand harsh conditions without getting damaged. The bag also features an interior lining that is resistant to scratch, multiple compartments, a carry handle, and a removable shoulder strap which gives you the option of carrying the bag hands-free. The interior has detachable foam dividers, which allows for customization of storage for your headset, as well as extra room for headphones, cable, batteries, chargers, and more Finally, the bag costs $19.99 on Amazon and comes with a 3-year warranty. We found the carrying case to be sturdy, and spacious. When we tested it, we were able to accommodate the headset, two pairs of headphones, a cable and charge in the bag. All the items fitted comfortably, and none of them were awkwardly placed. We are of the opinion that the product offers what it says it offers, and therefore recommend the product to our readers.
Leap Motion Universal Virtual Reality Developer Bundle
The Leap Motion Universal Virtual Reality Developer Bundle is meant for early adopters and developers. The Leap Motion Universal Virtual Reality Developer Bundle arrives with the Universal Virtual Reality Developer Mount, and the controller device. The Universal Virtual Reality Developer Mount is used to securely mount the controller to headsets like the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift Consumer Version1. The bundle comes with 3M adhesive, which enables stable attachment to both flat and curved surfaces. You also get a 15 foot long USB extension cable for situations where the headset is being used room wide. By buying the Leap Motion Universal Virtual Reality Developer Bundle, you would also be plugging into a community of more than 200,000 developers around the world.
We tested this bundle with the Oculus Rift Consumer Version headset. The motion controller gives games a more immersive quality. However, we feel that the experience of catching objects is imperfect due to latency and accuracy issues. It requires an exorbitant amount of effort to achieve an ideal throw and catch, and we hope that leap motion shall fix it We also do not like the fact that you cannot use this product with multiple VR headsets, such as switching between an Oculus Rift headset, and an HTC Vive. You can, however, solve this problem with a few Youtube tutorials that show you how to connect the Leap bundle to the headset using tape only.
SubPac M2 Wearable Physical Sound System
The SubPac M2 Wearable Physical Sound System is perhaps the most expensive VR accessory that we have reviewed so far. It goes for $349 on Amazon. For such an expensive product, it had better deliver on its promise of letting you experience sound with your body. This product comes with proprietary technology to convert low-end frequencies to vibrations that your body can feel. The device, therefore, enables you to experience immersive sound in gaming, music, and VR, all in a portable, wearable form factor. This product is also perfect for bringing the sound experience to the deaf and others with hearing problems. The SubPac Wearable Sound System delivers on the promise of letting you feel sound with your body.
The exterior look and feel are exquisite, and it seems a lot of work went into ensuring the SubPac is durable and looks good. The SubPac sound system also fits well without too much adjustment. We loved the bass coming from the sound system, and it heightens immersiveness of the VR experience. At times we felt distracted from games with a particularly low-frequency ambiance, but that we quickly fixed it with intensity calibration on the SubPac that involved simply turning a knob and adjusting preferences. We also feel that SubPac could improve integration with the Oculus Rift by making the sound system work better with the Oculus headphones. But it is overall a great and highly recommended product.
Oculus Rift Earphones
They are manufactured by Oculus, and so have the benefits of increased integration as well as credibility. The Oculus Rift Earphones provide a more immersive audio experience and are made specifically for the Oculus Rift. They are noise isolation earphones, and so they give the benefit of fewer sound distractions. Despite the claims by Oculus CEO Brendan decribe that the earphones were better than some high-end earphones, we found them to be less than appealing. They are, however, better than the earphones that come with the headset. They are also easy to install, and you just need a few twists using the included tool to remove the old earpieces and replace with the new ones. The problem for us is that the high notes were so shrill, and we could barely stand the earphones while listening to electronic music. That is something that Facebook and Oculus need to look into.
These gadgets are two controllers for the Oculus Rift that enable you to utilize your hands in virtual environments. You can manipulate objects in virtual environments with clinical precision using constellation tracking. You are also able to explore various Touch experiences on the Oculus store.
Preorders for the Oculus Touch were opened on October 10, and they shall be available for sale at physical retailers starting December 6. We love the Oculus Touch for having a familiar button layout as well as being lightweight and taking up little space. However, we feel that the Oculus Touch would be better off having a touch pad. Our experience with distance tracking was also subpar and needs to be improved on.
We have come to the end of our review of Oculus Rift Accessories. We hope you use the information provided above to make informed decisions regarding purchases of Oculus Rift accessories. As usual, please let us know your thoughts regarding Oculus Rift accessories in the comments. Happy hunting!
