MSI VR One backpack does not look like a prototype as one would expect. Its garish red design gives it a completely different look. Back pack computers for virtual reality gaming are in their luminal state. Although people know about their general concept, only a few people have actually tried them out. In fact, only a few people have seen their finished designs and known specs.
However, this is changing with MSI, a Taiwanese firm, showcasing its VR backpack known as the VR One backpack this week at the Tokyo Game Show. VR backpack is basically a virtual gaming PC that can be worn just like a backpack.
MSI has not been forthcoming prior this show stating specs of its VR backpack. However, it is currently known that the VR backpack is powered by a high-end, over-clocked Intel Core i7 processor. It also has an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 graphics chip. Other known specs include its weight of less than 8 pounds (3.6kg) and connectivity features like USB 3.0 ports, microphone jack, headphone jack and Mini Display Port.
Firts i want to say it is optimized for HTC Vive, that is great. This VR backpack is light and thin weighing less than eight pounds (3.6kg). It is a mobile PC that uses hot-swappable batteries and Pascal graphics to give users an unmatched VR experience. According to MSI, VR One is capable of “over 90 FPS for any high-level VR device.”. It has 1x HDMI port, 1 Mini DisplayPort and 1 ultra-speed Thunderbolt3 by Type-C port support highest bandwidth for dual 2K displays per eye. Moreover, there are 4x USB 3.0 ports for more external devices for some VR set requests.
MSI further says that it is possible for users to enjoy a game play of more than 1.5hours from the backpack. If you will want to use this VR longer than this or if a relative, a spouse or friend will wants to play, you will have the option of using the hot-swappable twin batteries of the backpack.
The major drawback of MSI VR One backpack is its batteries. This VR backpack computer does not allow you to enjoy gaming the whole day with it on your back. Its rechargeable battery packs are inserted in its sides to power it for up to 90 minutes of VR game play combined. This is not a lot of gaming time considering that the device does not look like a strapped notebook. Instead, it is a high-end, compact desktop that has to power controllers and VR headset.
Availability and price
In a press release, MSI says that this VR backpack will be launched in the U.S in late October. If it successfully hit this window, MSI VR One will be the first VR backpack that will be available in the market for purchase. MSI is yet to reveal the price of its backpack. However, considering the batteries and specs of this PC, it will not be cheap.
Who should buy it?
Regardless of the price, this device will be worth buying for fans of computer games. Its weight and other specs make it a convenient gaming machine. Any virtual reality or computer games fan should buy this VR backpack once available for purchase.
If MSI releases and avails MSI VR One backpack to buyers by the end of this year, it will eliminate the limitations of current VR experience. But even gamers should wait and think, before they buy this backpack. Backpack is not for seated experince and controllers at the moment has only HTC Vive, Oculus Touch will be released soon. There are not great games to play where this backpack is must be, is better and more comfortable than desktop PC. I like that idea if you considering to buy this backpack for a business, but not for personal use at the moment. Who knows?
